What is LED Light Therapy?

To be honest, I don’t really consider myself much of a “machine” girl.

I believe strongly in the healing power of human touch…

…and for that reason I mostly like to work with my hands during facials.

However, when I learned more about LED light therapy, I knew this was something I needed to incorporate into my practice. LED light therapy is, in my opinion, one of the most impressive modalities for its ability to affect positive changes in the skin, without the downsides of most other advanced esthetics treatments.

So what exactly is light therapy, you ask?

Light therapy is the application of specific wavelengths of light to tissue to obtain therapeutic benefits. Research has shown that “LED is an effective therapeutic modality to promote the healing of skin wounds.” The biological effects promoted by this therapy “are related to the decrease in inflammatory cells, increased fibroblast proliferation, angiogenesis stimulation, formation of granulation tissue, and increased collagen synthesis.”

LED therapy is also known for its ability to rejuvenate skin, treat acne, decrease inflammation and increase micro-circulation.

Blue, red and near-infrared are the most commonly used wavelengths in LED light therapy. These specific wavelengths are well researched and scientifically proven to produce therapeutic benefits. Blue penetrates through the epidermis and is known to kill C. acnes bacteria. Red reaches into the dermal layer and has been shown to enhance collagen and elastin production through photobiostimulation of fibroblasts. Near-infrared penetrates deepest and increases micro-circulation (tissue repair), decreases inflammation and attenuates pain.

The machine matters.

The machine that I use in the studio is the Celluma Pro. This is a state-of-the-art machine by one of the most reputable manufacturers of LED devices for use in esthetics. It is FDA cleared, safe for almost everyone (keep reading to learn the few conditions which are contra-indicated for LED light therapy), and plays very well with other treatments and modalities because it is such a low-risk, non-invasive treatment.

LED For Anti-Aging

LED treatments for anti-aging utilize mostly red and near-infrared wavelengths; this stimulates collagen and elastic production and increases micro-circulation. A series of treatments will leave your skin tighter and brighter, with a decrease in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

LED For Acne Treatment

LED light therapy is a promising acne treatment without the common side effects of drying out the skin and impairing skin barrier function, which often come along with traditional acne treatments.

Blue light helps kill acne bacteria, while red and near-infrared light decreases inflammation and jumpstarts the wound healing process.

How many treatments do I need?

This will vary depending on your skin conditions and goals, but it generally takes a series of twice weekly treatments for 4-6 weeks to see significant changes in the skin.

What are the contra-indications for LED?

The following should not use LED light therapy

  • Those with epilepsy or seizure disorders

  • Those on steroidal medications

  • Those with photosensitivity (certain disorders and medications can cause increased photosensitivity) unless you have written consent from your physician

  • Children under the age of 12
